​1880년 빈센트는 그림을 그리는 일이 자신을 구하는 일이라고 생각하고 화가가 되기로 합니다. 그리고, 브뤼셀, 헤이그, 앙베르 등지에서 본격적으로 그림을 그리기 시작합니다. 당시 그의 작품은 노동자, 농민 등 하층민의 생활과 풍경을 그렸습니다.

1884년 부터 1885년 사이에 빈센트는 뉘넨(Nuenen)에 있는 오래된 교회 타워를 보고 여러 점의 유화와 소묘를 그렸습니다. 있는 그대로의 모습이 아닌 12세기 교회가 좋았을 시절의 모습을 투영해 그렸습니다. 실제 교회는 첨탑은 1792년 파괴되었고, 교회 타워도 철거가 진행 중이었다고 합니다.
