[07/13] 잡초 [雜草, weeds]

꽃말: 실제적인 사람(a matter-of-fact person, practical person)

가꾸지 않아도 저절로 나서 자라는 불필요한 식물들을 말하는 잡초는 경작지, 도로, 그 밖의 빈터에서 자라며 생활에 큰 도움이 되지 못하는 초본식물이나 목본식물을 칭합니다. 농업에서는 경작지에서 재배하는 식물 이외의 것을 잡초라고 하며, 경작지 이외에서 자라는 것은 야초(野草)라고 구분하기도 합니다.

잡초는 작물(作物)에 비하여 생육이 빠르고 번식력이 강할 뿐 아니라 종자의 수명도 깁니다.

그런데, 아메리카 원주민들에게는 잡초를 뜻하는 단어가 없다고 합니다. 그들은 작물과 잡초를 구별하지 않았기 때문이라고 합니다. 모든 식물과 동물이 각자 자신의 영혼을 가지고 있고, 나름 존재의 이유가 있는 생명이라고 여겼기 때문이랍니다.
