□ 전설, 신화

● 스코틀랜드
10세기 중반, 말캄 1세의 시대에 데인인이 스코틀랜드를 침략합니다. 이때, 침입한 척후병이 성 밑에 난 엉 겅퀴가시에 찔려 비명을 지르는 바람에 성내의 병사들이 깨어나 물리쳤다고 합니다. 이후 스코틀랜드 왕가의 문장이 되었는데 지금도 거터훈장 다음으로 엉겅퀴훈장이 존재합니다.

● 성경
성경에서는 땅에 대한 저주로 언급되기도 합니다.

땅은 네 앞에 가시덤불과 엉겅퀴를 돋게 하고 너는 들의 풀을 먹으리라. (창세기 3,18)
Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you, as you eat of the plants of the field. (Genesis 3,18)

내가 만일 값을 치르지 않고 그 수확을 빼앗으며 그 주인들을 상심하게 하였다면 밀 대신 엉겅퀴가 나오고 보리 대신 잡초가 자라도 괜찮네. (욥기 31,39-40)

● 기독교
성모마리아가 십자가에서 뺀 못을 묻은 곳에서 엉겅퀴가 피었다고 해서, 그리스도교의 성화로 되어 있습니다.

● 북유럽
가시가 마녀를 내쫓아서 가축의 병을 없애거나 결혼성취의 주술에도 효과가 있다고 믿었다고 합니다. 또한 북유럽신화의 천둥의 신, 토르의 꽃으로 낙뢰를 방지한다고 믿어졌습니다.
