War, Barbara Kingsolver

There's a graveyard in northern France where all the dead boys from D-Day are buried. The white crosses reach from one horizon to the other. I remember looking it over and thinking it was a forest of graves. But the rows were like this, dizzying, diagonal, perfectly straight, so after all it wasn't a forest but an orchard of graves. Nothing to do with nature, unless you count human nature.

프랑스 북부엔 D-데이 전사자들이 매장되어 있는 묘지가 있다. 하얀 십자가의 무덤이 지평선에서 지평선까지 이어지고 있다. 난 그것을 보며 묘비의 숲이라고 생각했던 걸 기억한다. 하지만 묘비의 행렬이 현기증이 날 정도로 완벽한 일직선으로 늘어져 있어서, 묘비의 숲이 아니라 묘비의 과수원이었던 것이다. 무수한 묘비가 펼쳐진 그런 광경은 자연이 만들어낸 게 아니라, 인간이 지닌 폭력성이 만들어낸 거라고 봐야만 했다
