종려나무 또는 야자나무는 성경에 자주 나오는 나무 중 하나인데, 성경 속의 종려나무와 야자나무는 대추야자(date palm; Phoenix dactylifera)를 가리킨다고 합니다. 이 나무의 열매가 대추나무의 열매와 비슷하다고 하여 대추야자라고 부르지만, 갈매나무과의 대추나무와 대추야자는 속성이 전혀 다릅니다.

그들은 엘림에 다다랐다. 그곳에는 샘이 열두 개, 야자나무가 일흔 그루 있었다. 그들은 그곳 물가에 진을 쳤다. (탈출기 15,27)

Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water. (Exodus 15,27)

의인은 야자나무처럼 돋아나고 레바논의 향백나무처럼 자라리라. (시편 92,12)

고대에서 부터 열매가 식용으로 사용되며 생명의 나무로 불렸던 대추나무의 가지는 외형 역시 곧고 수려하게 뻗어나가는 특징이 있어서 생명, 풍요, 외에 영광, 아름다움, 기쁨, 승리  등의 긍정적인 상징을 지니고 있습니다. 또한, 개선하는 전쟁 영웅들을 환영하는 행사에도 많이 사용되었다고 합니다.

이튿날, 축제를 지내러 온 많은 군중이 예수님께서 예루살렘에 오신다는 말을 듣고서, 종려나무 가지를 들고 그분을 맞으러 나가 이렇게 외쳤다. “‘호산나! 주님의 이름으로 오시는 분은 복되시어라.’ 이스라엘의 임금님은 복되시어라.” (요한복음 12,12-13)

On the next day, when the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches and went out to meet him, and cried out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, (even) the king of Israel." (John 12,12-13)
