원래 겨우살이(mistletoe)는 Viscum album만을 의미하였으나, 현재는 단향과(Santalaceae) 외에 겨우살이과(Loranthaceae), Misodendrum 등 다른 과의 식물들도 mistletoe로 불리기도 합니다.

참나무류나 팽나무, 오리나무류, 밤나무, 자작나무 등의 줄기와 가지에 붙어서 기생하며 자라는 쌍떡잎식물 단향목 겨우살이과의 상록 기생관목입니다.

산의 나무에 해를 주지만 약용으로 사용되어 인간에게는 해로운과 이로움이 같이 있는 식물입니다.

□ 신화, 전설

● 북유럽(Scandinavia)

13세기 新 에다(Prose Edda)에 의하면, 여신 프리그(Frigg)는 모든 생물과 무생물로 부터 그녀의 아들인 발드르(Baldr)를 해치지 않겠다는 맹세를 받습니다. 다른 신들이 모여서 그 맹세를 테스트해 보기 위해 돌, 화살, 불로 그를 공격해 봅니다만 아무것도 발드르를 해칠 수 없었죠. 하지만, 프리그는 겨우살이(mistletoe)에게는 맹세를 받지 않았습니다. 발드르를 해치기에는 너무 연약해 보였기 때문이죠. 이 사실을 알게 된 로키(Loki)는 발드르의 동생이자 장님인 호두르(Höðr)를 찾아가서 호드르도 다른 신들처럼 던져보라며 겨우살이로 만든 창을 건냅니다. 이 사실을 모르는 호드르는 겨우살이로 만든 창을 던지고, 이를 맞은 발드르는 죽음에 이르게 됩니다.

덴마크인의 사적(Gesta Danorum)에 의하면, 발드르와 호드르는 구혼 경쟁자였습니다. 호드르는 미스틸테인(Mistilteinn)이라는 이름이 붙은 검으로 발드르를 죽입니다. Mistilteinn은 고대 스칸디나비아어로 겨우살이(mistletoe)라는 뜻이라고 합니다. 미스틸테인이라는 이름의 검은 신화 다른 곳에도 자주 등장합니다.

● 그리스 로마(Ancient Greece and Rome)

로마 신화에서 로마의 건설자 아이네아스의 황금가지(Golden Bough of Aeneas)는 겨우살이(mistletoe)의 가지라고 알려져 있습니다.

또한 그리스 신화에서 겨우살이는 영웅들이 지하세계에 들어가기 위해 사용되었습니다.

로마인들은 겨우살이를 평화(peace), 사랑(love), 이해(understanding) 등의 상징으로 보기도 했습니다.
