속명(屬名) Ranunculus는 작은 개구리(little frog)를 뜻하는 라틴어 rana에서 따왔습니다. 물가를 좋아하는 생육특성에서 얻어진 이름이라고 하네요.

영어 속명(俗名)인 buttercup은 꽃이 노랗다 보니 버터를 얻을 수 있는 식물이라는 잘못된 믿음에서 전해졌을 것으로 추정됩니다. 사실 버터를 얻을 수 있기는 커녕 가축들에게 유독한 성분이 있다고 합니다.

□ 전설, 신화

● 코요테 전설
미국 북서부 내에서는 코요테의 눈(Coyote's eyes)이라고도 불리는데, 전설에 의하면 코요테는 자신의 눈을 던졌다가 받는데, 이를 독수리가 채가는 경우가 있다고 합니다. 앞을 볼 수 없게 되면 코요테는 이 꽃으로 눈을 만들어 넣었다고 하네요.
