목련종류의 꽃봉오리는 신이(辛夷)라고 해서 2000년 전부터 약재로 쓰여 왔다고 합니다.

무화과는 꽃이 피지 않는 과실이라고 해서 무화과(無花果)라고 하나 실제로 꽃이 피지 않는 것은 아니고, 꽃이 과실 내에서 피다보니 외부에서 보이지 않을 뿐입니다. 봄부터 여름에 걸쳐 잎겨드랑이에 열매 같은 꽃이삭이 달리고 안에 작은 꽃이 많이 달립니다.

□ 성경과 무화과

포도, 감람과 함께 팔레스타인을 대표하는 3대 식물 중 하나인 무화과나무는 성경에도 많이 등장을 합니다.

● 가림, 숨김

성경의 창세기에서 아담과 하와가 선과 악을 알게 하는 열매를 먹고 난 후 자신들의 알몸을 가리기 위해 무화과나무 잎으로 자신들의 몸을 가렸습니다.

그러자 그 둘은 눈이 열려 자기들이 알몸인 것을 알고, 무화과나무 잎을 엮어서 두렁이를 만들어 입었다. (창세기 3,7)
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves. (Genesis 3,7)

● 평화, 번영, 안정

솔로몬이 살아 있는 동안 내내 유다와 이스라엘에서는 단에서 브에르 세바에 이르기까지, 사람마다 자기 포도나무와 무화과나무 아래에서 마음 놓고 살았다. (열왕기상권 5,5)
Thus Judah and Israel lived in security, everyone under their own vine and fig tree from Dan to Beer-sheba, as long as Solomon lived. (1 Kings 5:5)

● 노력의 대가

무화과나무를 돌보는 이는 그 열매를 먹고 자기 주인을 보살피는 이는 존경을 받는다. (잠언 27,18)

Those who tend a fig tree eat its fruit;
so those attentive to their master will be honored. (Proverbs 27:18)

● 파멸, 파괴, 재앙

저들의 포도나무와 무화과나무를 치시며 그 영토 안의 나무들을 부러뜨리셨다. (시편 105,33)
He struck down their vines and fig trees,
shattered the trees of their country. (Psalms 105:33)

그들은 네가 거둔 곡식과 양식을 먹어 치우고 네 아들딸들도 집어삼키리라. 또한 그들은 네 양 떼와 소 떼를 먹어 치우고 네 포도나무와 무화과나무도 집어삼키리라. 그들은 요새 성읍들을, 네가 의지하는 성읍들을 칼로 파괴하리라. (예레미야서 5,17)

● 의인과 악인

● 열매를 맺지 못하는 사람

예수님께서는 새벽에 성안으로 되돌아가실 때에 시장하셨다. 마침 길가에 있는 무화과나무 한 그루를 보시고 가까이 가셨다. 그러나 잎사귀밖에는 달리 아무것도 보이지 않았으므로 그 나무를 향하여 말씀하셨다. “이제부터 너는 영원히 열매 맺는 일이 없을 것이다.” 그러자 나무가 즉시 말라 버렸다. 제자들이 그것을 보고 놀라서, “어째서 무화과나무가 즉시 말라 버렸습니까?” 하고 물었다. 예수님께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “내가 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 믿음을 가지고 의심하지 않으면, 이 무화과나무에 일어난 일을 할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 이 산더러 ‘들려서 저 바다에 빠져라.’ 하여도 그대로 이루어질 것이다. 그리고 너희가 기도할 때에 믿고 청하는 것은 무엇이든지 다 받을 것이다.” (마태오복음서 21,18-22)
When he was going back to the city in the morning, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went over to it, but found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again.” And immediately the fig tree withered. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed and said, “How was it that the fig tree withered immediately?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Amen, I say to you, if you have faith and do not waver, not only will you do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done. 이튿날 그들이 베타니아에서 나올 때에 예수님께서는 시장하셨다. 마침 잎이 무성한 무화과나무를 멀리서 보시고, 혹시 그 나무에 무엇이 달렸을까 하여 가까이 가 보셨지만, 잎사귀밖에는 아무것도 보이지 않았다. 무화과 철이 아니었기 때문이다. 예수님께서는 그 나무를 향하여 이르셨다. “이제부터 영원히 어느 누구도 너에게서 열매를 따 먹는 일이 없을 것이다.” 제자들도 이 말씀을 들었다. (마르코복음서 11,12-14)
The next day as they were leaving Bethany he was hungry. Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, he went over to see if he could find anything on it. When he reached it he found nothing but leaves; it was not the time for figs. And he said to it in reply, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again!” And his disciples heard it. (Mark 11,:12-14)

예수님께서 이러한 비유를 말씀하셨다. “어떤 사람이 자기 포도밭에 무화과나무 한 그루를 심어 놓았다. 그리고 나중에 가서 그 나무에 열매가 달렸나 하고 찾아보았지만 하나도 찾지 못하였다. 그래서 포도 재배인에게 일렀다. ‘보게, 내가 삼 년째 와서 이 무화과나무에 열매가 달렸나 하고 찾아보지만 하나도 찾지 못하네. 그러니 이것을 잘라 버리게. 땅만 버릴 이유가 없지 않은가?’ 그러자 포도 재배인이 그에게 대답하였다. ‘주인님, 이 나무를 올해만 그냥 두시지요. 그동안에 제가 그 둘레를 파서 거름을 주겠습니다. 그러면 내년에는 열매를 맺겠지요. 그러지 않으면 잘라 버리십시오.’” (루카복음서 13,6-9)
And he told them this parable: “There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. [So] cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?’ He said to him in reply, ‘Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.’” (Luke 13:6-9)

● 다가올 때

“너희는 무화과나무를 보고 그 비유를 깨달아라. 어느덧 가지가 부드러워지고 잎이 돋으면 여름이 가까이 온 줄 알게 된다. 이와 같이 너희도 이 모든 일을 보거든, 사람의 아들이 문 가까이 온 줄 알아라. (마태오복음서 24,32-33)
“Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, know that he is near, at the gates. (Matthew 24:32-33)

“너희는 무화과나무를 보고 그 비유를 깨달아라. 어느덧 가지가 부드러워지고 잎이 돋으면 여름이 가까이 온 줄 알게 된다. 이와 같이 너희도 이러한 일들이 일어나는 것을 보거든, 사람의 아들이 문 가까이 온 줄 알아라. (마르코복음서 13,28-29)
