네덜란드의 후기 인상주의 화가 빈센트 반 고흐(Vincent van Gogh)의 대표작 중 하나인 <별이 빛나는 밤 (The Starry Night)>은 미술사를 통틀어 가장 널리 알려지고 대중의 사랑을 받는 걸작입니다.

이 작품은 고흐가 정신적 위기를 겪으며 프랑스 생레미 드 프로방스(Saint-Rémy-de-Provence)의 생폴 드 모졸 요양원에 자발적으로 머물던 1889년 6월에 그려졌습니다. 요양원 방의 동쪽 창문을 통해 바라본 새벽녘의 풍경을 바탕으로, 그의 강렬한 감정과 기억, 그리고 상상력이 더해져 독창적인 밤하늘로 재해석되었습니다.

화면을 압도하는 소용돌이치는 역동적인 밤하늘과 밝게 빛나는 별, 초승달은 고흐 특유의 두껍고 거친 붓놀림(임파스토 기법)을 통해 마치 살아 움직이는 듯한 생명력을 보여줍니다. 전경에 길게 뻗어 있는 어두운 사이프러스(구상나무) 나무는 삶과 죽음, 혹은 지상과 천상을 연결하는 매개체로 해석되기도 합니다.
