꽃말: 빛을 찾다(to find a light)

제주도에서 발견되며 알려졌으며, 최초 발견자들은 '제주별꽃'으로 명명하기를 원했다고 합니다. 하지만, 그러면 석죽과 식물로 오인하기 쉬우므로 결국 꽃이 노란색의 별처럼 보인다는 뜻의 '노란별수선'으로 칭하였다고 합니다.

노란별수선속(Hypoxia)은 과거에 수선화과(Amaryllidaceae)로 분류되었으나, 형태 및 분자형질에 의해 독립된 노란별수선과(Hypoxidaceae)로 분리되었습니다.
