그리스 신화에 나오는 올림포스 12신 중 하나로 미와 사랑의 여신으로 로마 신화의 베누스(Venus)와 동일하게 여겨집니다. 

사랑과 아름다움 외에 즐거움, 욕정, 출산도 관장한다고 알려져 있으며, 그리스 남부에 있던 왕국인 라코니아(Laconia)에서는 전사의 여신(warrior goddess)으로 숭배되었다고 합니다. 또한 매춘부들의 수호여신(patron goddess of prostitutes)이기도 합니다.

미의 여신답게 아름다운 외모를 지니고 있다고 여겨지고 있으며, 파리스의 사과 이야기에 보면, 헤라(Hera), 아테나(Athena)와 함께 3대 미녀로 나옵니다.

아프로디테의 탄생과 관련해서는 몇가지 설이 있습니다. 

기원전 8세기에 살았던 호메로스(호머, Homer)의 일리아드(Iliad)에 의하면, 아프로디테는 제우스(Zeus)와 티탄 신족의 여신 디오네(Dione) 사이에서 태어났다고 하였다. 

기원전 750년에서 650년 사이에 살었던 헤시오도스(Hesiod)가 쓴 신들의 계보(Theogony)에 의하면 크로노스의 낫에 잘린 우라노스(Uranus)의 성기가 바다에 떨어집니다. 거기서 흘러나온 그의 정액이 바닷물과 섞이면서 거품(ἀφρός, aphrós)이 생기게 되는데, 이 거품이 흘러다니다가 키테라(Cythera) 섬 해안가에 닿게 됩니다. 그리고, 거기서 아프로디테가 태어났다고 합니다. 헤시오도스는 aphrós (ἀφρός)는 바다 거품(sea-foam)이며, 아프로디테의 이름은 '거품에서 올라온(risen from the foam)'이라는 뜻이라고 해석하였죠.

19세기 후반에서 20세기 학자들은 헤시오도스의 거품설을 받아들였습니다. Michael Janda도 이 설을 지지하였고, Daniel Kölligan은 이 설을 지지하면서 아프로디테라는 그녀의 이름이 '안개(또는 거품)에서 나온 빛남(shining up from the mist/foam)'이라고 해석을 하였죠. 

도착한 곳은 키테라(Cythera) 섬이라는 설과 키프로스(Cyprus) 섬이라는 설이 있습니다. 그러다 보니 아프로디테는 케테라의 여인(Lady of Cythera)이라는 의미로 키테레이아(Cytherea)라고 불리기도 하고, 키프러스의 여인(Lady of Cyprus)이라는 의미로 키프리안(Cyprian)이라고 불리기도 합니다. 

다양한 지역에서 비슷한 여신이 숭배를 받았었기에 그녀에 대한 출생이나 묘사, 그리고 관련된 신들과 신화가 다양하게 존재합니다.
