꽃말: 나쁜 기운을 쫓다(to drive off evil spirits), 행운(幸運, good fortune), 사랑(love); 경의(敬意, respect), 신비한 사람(mysterious person)

속명 Acorus은 그리스어 άχόρου(áchórou)에서 나왔습니다. 그 뿌리에서 나온 즙으로 눈병을 치료해왔기 때문에 άχόρου는 눈동자(pupil)를 뜻하는 κόρη(kóri)에서 유래하는 것으로 추정됩니다.

종소명인 칼라무스(calamus)는 갈대(reed)를 의미하는 그리스어 κάλαμος(kálamos)에서 파생된 낱말이라고 합니다.

한글 이름 창포는 겉으로 보기에 부들같이 생겼으나 싱싱하게 자라므로 무성하게 자라는 포류(부들류)라는 뜻이라고 합니다.

영어의 일반명에는 sweet flag와 같이 sweet라는 단어가 들어가는 경우가 많은데 이는 달콤한 향기가 나기 때문입니다. 또한 iris는 14세기까지 flag라고 불리었는데, 창포의 모습이 iris를 닮아서 창포를 sweet flag라고 부른다고 합니다.

□ 풍습

여자들은 음력 5월 5일인 단오날 단오비음이라 하여 나쁜 귀신을 쫓는다는 의미에서 창포를 삶은 물로 머리를 감고 얼굴도 씼었으며, 붉고 푸른 새 옷을 입고 창포뿌리를 깎아 붉은 물을 들여서 비녀를 만들어 꽂았다고 합니다. 또한, 남자들은 창포 뿌리를 허리춤에 차고 다녔는데 액을 물리치기 위해서라고 합니다. 이는 향기가 좋아서 생긴 풍습으로 생각되는데 이러한 풍습이 이어져 내려오다가 악귀를 쫓는다는 의미도 갖게 된 것으로 추정하는 시각도 있습니다.

또한 단오날에 창포꽃을 따서 말려 창포요를 만들어 깔고 자면 여름철 병마나 마귀도 근접하지 못할 것으로 알고 창포꽃을 앞다투어 채취하기도 했습니다. 예전에는 민가 주위에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 식물이어서 이런 풍습이 많이 있었으나, 최근에는 보기 힘든 희귀식물이 되었습니다.

□ 다른 나라

● 인도

인도에서는 창포가 애용되던 약초여서 일 년 내내 시장에서 많은 양의 창포가 거래되었습니다. 전해오는 말에 의하면 창포가 어린아이들의 장에 탈이 났을 때 쓰이는 매우 소중한 약초였기 때문에 늦은 밤에 창포를 사러 온 사람에게 문을 열어주지 않는 약사는 처벌을 받을 정도였다고 합니다. 인도인들은 많은 양으로 창포를 내복하여 구토제로 이용하였고 적은 양을 사용하여 흥분제와 강장제 그리고 가스를 제거해주는 용도로도 이용하였습니다. 또한 중풍과 여타의 신경성 장애 증상에도 이용하였습니다.

● 이슬람교

이슬람교도인들은 결석증에 창포를 사용하였고 이가 나는 어린이들에게 창포를 물게 하였습니다. 실론(Ceylon) 지방에서 창포로 만든 차는 어린이들의 기생충 구제에 효과가 뛰어난 것으로 생각하였습니다.

□ 신화

● 그리스신화

창포(calamus)는 오랫동안 사랑의 상징이었습니다. Calamus라는 이름은 그리스 신화에 나오는 칼라모스(Calamus, Kalamos, Κάλαμος)와 관련이 있습니다.

칼라모스는 강의 신 마이안드로스(Maeander)의 아들인데 서풍 제피로스(Zephyrus, the West Wind)와 계절의 여신 호라이 자매 중 봄을 담당한 클로리스(Chloris, Spring)의 아들인 카르포스(Karpos)와 단짝 친구였습니다.

어느날 둘이서 수영 시합을 하던 중 카르포스가 물에 빠져 죽자 슬픔을 이기지 못하고 자신도 물에 빠졌는데 아버지인 강의 신 마이안드로스가 그를 갈대로 변신시켰다고 합니다. 전승에 따라서는 물에 빠진 것이 아니라 친구의 죽음을 슬퍼하다가 몸이 말라서 갈대가 되었다고도 합니다.

카르포스는 매년 죽었다가 다시 살아나는 들판의 열매가 되었는데, 강변에 바람이 불 때 갈대에서 나는 소리는 카르포스의 죽음을 슬퍼하는 칼라모스의 울음소리라고 합니다.
