갈대라는 이름은 대나무와 유사한 풀이라는 데서 유래한 것으로 추측됩니다.

속명의 Phragmites는 울타리(Phragma)를 뜻하는 그리스어에서 왔으며, 냇가에서 울타리 모양으로 자라기 때문에 붙여진 것으로 보여집니다.

원래 갈대(reed)는 Phragmites australis를 말하지만, reed라고 불리는 식물은 그 외에도 많습니다.

□ 성경

성경에서도 갈대가 등장하는데, 일반적으로 갈대는 바람에 쉽게 꺾이고 넘어지는 특성이 있어 힘없고 연약함, 변덕스러움, 허약함 등을 비유하기도 합니다.

그는 부러진 갈대를 꺾지 않고 꺼져 가는 심지를 끄지 않으리라. 그는 성실하게 공정을 펴리라. 그는 지치지 않고 기가 꺾이는 일 없이 마침내 세상에 공정을 세우리니 섬들도 그의 가르침을 고대하리라. [이사(이사야서) 42,3-4]

신약성경에도 갈대는 연약한 약자의 모습으로 나옵니다.

그는 올바름을 승리로 이끌 때까지 부러진 갈대를 꺾지 않고 연기 나는 심지를 끄지 않으리니 민족들이 그의 이름에 희망을 걸리라.”[마태(마태오 복음서) 12,20-21]

A bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory. And in his name the Gentiles will hope." [Mt(Matthew) 12,20-21]

성경에 등장하는 갈대도 여러종류가 있습니다. 원어로 된 성경을 읽어볼 수는 없어서 정확한 표현은 모르지만, 네이버와 천주교의 구약 및 신약성경 한글판과 NAB 영문 성경을 참조했습니다.

● 카네 [cane]

영어 cane은 대롱(tube), 갈대(reed) 등을 의미하는 아카드어(Akkadian) qanû에서 유래한다고 합니다.

아룬도속(Arundo)는 Old World canes으로, 아룬디나리아속(Arundinaria)은 New World canes라고 불린다고 합니다.

너는 또 순금 등잔대를 만들어라. 등잔대의 밑받침과 가지는 마치로 두드려 만들고, 잔과 꽃받침과 꽃잎은 등잔대와 한 덩어리가 되어야 한다. 등잔대 양쪽에 가지 여섯 개가 나오게 하는데, 한쪽에 등잔대 가지 세 개, 다른 쪽에 등잔대 가지 세 개가 벋어 나오게 하여라. [탈출(탈출기) 25,31-32]

여기서 가지(branches)는 카네(cane)라고 합니다.

또한, 카네는 창 자루, 활, 피리, 지팡이, 측량하는 장대의 재료 등으로 사용되었으며,아래에서 측량 장대, 측량자 등은 카네라고 합니다.

그분께서 나를 그곳으로 데리고 가셨을 때, 거기에 어떤 사람이 있었는데, 그 모습은 빛나는 구리 같았다. 그는 아마 줄과 측량 장대를 손에 들고 대문에 서 있었다. [에제(에제키엘서) 40,3]

● 칼라모스 [calamus]

마태오 복음서에도 갈대(reed)가 나오는데, 이는 칼라모스(calamus)라고 합니다.

그들이 떠나가자 예수님께서 요한을 두고 군중에게 말씀하기 시작하셨다. “너희는 무엇을 구경하러 광야에 나갔더냐? 바람에 흔들리는 갈대냐? [마태(마태오 복음서) 11,7]

As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? [Mt(Matthew) 11,7]

또 그분께 침을 뱉고 갈대를 빼앗아 그분의 머리를 때렸다. [마태(마태오 복음서) 27,30]

● 부들 [쑾, 쑤프, cattail]

부들은 연못 가장자리와 습지에서 자라는 여러해살이풀입니다.

그러나 더 숨겨 둘 수가 없게 되자, 왕골 상자를 가져다 역청과 송진을 바르고, 그 안에 아기를 뉘어 강가 갈대 사이에 놓아두었다. [탈출(탈출기) 2,3]

When she could hide him no longer, she took a papyrus basket, daubed it with bitumen and pitch, and putting the child in it, placed it among the reeds on the river bank. [Ex(Exodus) 2,3]

마침 파라오의 딸이 목욕하러 강으로 내려왔다. 시녀들은 강가를 거닐고 있었는데, 공주가 갈대 사이에 있는 상자를 보고, 여종 하나를 보내어 그것을 가져오게 하였다. [탈출(탈출기) 2,5]

Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river to bathe, while her maids walked along the river bank. Noticing the basket among the reeds, she sent her handmaid to fetch it. [Ex(Exodus) 2,5]

여기서 왕골 상자는 파피루스로 만든 상자(papyrus basket)이며, 강대 갈대는 부들(reed)이라고도 합니다.

개천들은 악취를 풍기고 이집트의 나일 강과 지류들은 물이 줄고 메말라 갈대와 부들이 시들어 버리리라. 나일 강 어귀 강가에 있는 풀밭과 나일 강 변의 파종된 밭들은 모조리 말라 바람에 날려 아무것도 남지 않으리라. [이사(이사야서) 19,6-7]

Its streams shall become foul, and the canals of Egypt shall dwindle and dry up. Reeds and rushes shall wither away, and bulrushes on the bank of the Nile; All the sown land along the Nile shall dry up and blow away, and be no more. [Ls(Isaiah) 19,6-7]

● 파피루스 [고메, 왕골, paper reed, papyrus, papyrus sedge, Nile grass]

파피루스(papyrus)로 불리며, 종이, 갈대 상자, 갈대 배 등의 재료로 사용되었다고 합니다. 히브리어로는 고메라고 하며, 그리스에서는 비블로스로 불렸다고 하죠. 이 단어에서 성경을 뜻하는 영어 bible이 나왔다고 합니다.

뜨겁게 타오르던 땅은 늪이 되고 바싹 마른 땅은 샘터가 되며 승냥이들이 살던 곳에는 풀 대신 갈대와 왕골이 자라리라.  [이사(이사야서) 35,7]

● 아그몬

아그몬은 습지에서 자생하는 식물을 총칭하는 말이며, 밧줄 재료로 사용된다고 합니다.

그것은 연나무 밑 갈대와 늪으로 된 은신처에 엎드려 있다. 연나무는 그것을 그늘로 가려 주고 냇가의 버드나무는 그것을 에워싸 준다. [욥(욥기) 40,21-22]

● 아후

아후는 갈대의 일종으로 가축의 목초로 사용된다고 합니다.

그로부터 이 년이 지난 뒤, 파라오가 꿈을 꾸었다. 그가 나일 강 가에 서 있는데, 잘생기고 살진 암소 일곱 마리가 나일 강에서 올라와 갈대밭에서 풀을 뜯었다. [창세(창세기) 41,2]

□ 신화, 전설

● 그리스 신화: 판과 시링크스
호색한 인 목신(牧神) 판(Pan)은 어느 날 님프 시링크스(Syrinx)에 한 눈에 반하게 됩니다. 하지만, 판을 받아들일 생각이 없던 시링크스는 도망을 가죠. 쫓기던 시링크스는 막다른 길에서 다른 님프틀에게 부탁하여 갈대로 변하게 되죠. 시링크스를 못 잊는 판은 이 갈대로 피리를 만들어서 그녀를 그리워했다고 합니다.

● 그리스 신화: 임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀
로마의 시인 오비디우스(Ovidius)의 변신 이야기에 당나귀 귀를 가진 미다스왕(Midas)의 이야기가 나옵니다. 이발사는 어쩔 수 없이 미다스 왕의 비밀을 알게 되었는데, 이발사는 누군가에게 이야기하고 싶었지만, 그래서는 안되었죠. 결국, 이발사는 구덩이에 대고 임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀라고 속삭였습니다. 이후, 구덩이에서 갈대가 자라났는데, 바람에 나부끼면 이 비밀을 이야기 했다고 합니다. 이와 비슷한 내용은 한국을 비롯하여 세계의 온대와 한대에 걸쳐 전해지고 있습니다.

● 그리스 신화: 칼라모스(Calamus, Kalamos, Κάλαμος)
칼라모스는 프리기아(Phrygia)의 마이안드로스 강의 신 마이안드로스(Maiandros, 메안데르)의 아들이었습니다. 그는 서풍 제피로스(Zephyrus)와 계절의 여신 호라이 자매 중 하나인 클로리스(Khloris) 사이의 아들인 아름다운 청년 카르포스(Karpos)를 사랑했습니다. 어느 날 칼라모스와 카르포스가 마이안드로스 강에서 물놀이를 했는데, 둘이서 수영시합을 하다가 그만 카르포스가 물에 빠져 죽고 맙니다. 칼라모스는 사랑하는 친구의 죽음을 하염없이 슬퍼하다가 몸이 말라서 갈대가 되었습니다. 설에 따라서는 슬픔을 이기지 못하고 자신도 강물에 몸을 던졌는데 아버지인 강의 신 마이안드로스가 갈대로 변신시켰다고도 합니다. 갈대에서 나는 소리는 카르포스의 죽음을 슬퍼하는 칼라모스의 울음소리라고 합니다.

● 그리스 신화: 아키스(Acis)와 갈라테이아(Galatea)
외눈박이 거인족 키클로페스 중 한 명인 폴리페모스(Polyphemus, Πολύφημος)는 바다의 신인 갈라테이아를 사랑했습니다. 그런데, 어느날 폴리페모스는 목동 아키스의 품에 갈라테이아가 안겨있는 꿈을 꾸게 되고, 질투에 사로잡힌 그는 커다란 바위를 던져서 아키스를 죽게 했습니다. 갈라테이아는 아키스의 피를 강물로 바꾸었는데 이때 아키스의 모습이 강물에 비추자, 갈라테이아는 만져보려고 손을 뻗는 순간 어깨에서 갈대가 돋았다고 합니다.

밀, 벼와 함께 세계 3대 화곡류(禾穀類) 식량작물 중 하나입니다. 벼나 밀은 30배 이상 수확이 힘든 반면 옥수수는 한 알에서 수백알 이상을 수확할 수 있어서 적은 일손으로도 많은 수확을 얻을 수 있습니다.

그렇기 때문에 안데스 원주민들은 옥수수를 신성하게 여겼다고 합니다. 많은 인구를 유지할 수 있도록 했고, 재배하는 데 1년에 50일의 노동밖에 필요하지 않아 나머지 많은 노동력을 거대한 타완틴수요 문명과 아스텍 문명을 비롯한 수많은 남미 문명을 이룩하는 데 이용할 수 있었기 때문입니다.

미국식 영어로는 corn으로 알려져 있으나, corn은 곡식, 작물이라는 뜻으로 더 널리 쓰입니다. 유럽인들이 아메리카 대륙으로 이주한 초기 아메리카 원주민의 작물이라는 뜻으로 Indian corn이라고 부르던데에서 유래합니다.

영국식 영어 등 다른 영어권에서는 maize라는 단어를 사용합니다.
