꽃말: 웅대(雄大, grandeur, magnificence); 영광(榮光, glory), 번영(繁榮, prosperity)

레바논 삼나무 또는 레바논 개잎갈나무라고도 불리는 향백나무(Cedrus libani)는 해충이 꼬이지 않고, 잘 썩지 않아 이집트 파라오의 관을 짜는 귀하고 값비싼 목재였습니다. 한때 레바논 산림의 대부분을 울창하게 덮고 있었다고 하죠. 레바논에 있는 향백나무는 크고 웅장한 모습은 영광이나 번영 또는 속세의 자만심 등으로 비유되며 구약성경에 70번 이상 언급됩니다.

산들이 그 그늘로 덮이고 드높은 향백나무들이 그 가지들로 덮였습니다. (시편 80,11)

The mountains were covered by its shadow, the cedars of God by its branches. (Psalms 80,11)

의인은 야자나무처럼 돋아나고 레바논의 향백나무처럼 자라리라. (시편 92,13)

The just shall flourish like the palm tree, shall grow like a cedar of Lebanon. (Psalms 92,13)

높고 우뚝 솟은 레바논의 모든 향백나무들과 바산의 모든 참나무들 위로 (이사야 2,13)

Yes, against all the cedars of Lebanon and all the oaks of Bashan, (Isaiah 2,13)

또한, 이사야가 말한 레바논의 영광(The glory of Lebanon)이 백향나무를 말한다고도 합니다.

수선화처럼 활짝 피고 즐거워 뛰며 환성을 올려라. 레바논의 영광과 카르멜과 사론의 영화가 그곳에 내려 그들이 주님의 영광을, 우리 하느님의 영화를 보리라. (이사야 35,2)

They will bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice with joyful song. The glory of Lebanon will be given to them, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; They will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. (Isaiah 35,2)

또한, 훌륭한 건축 자재로 유명했는데, 다윗이 예루살렘 정복 뒤 향백나무로 궁전을 지었고 솔로몬도 레바논에서 예루살렘으로 이 나무를 가져와 성전과 왕궁을 지을 때 사용했다고 합니다.

티로 임금 히람이 다윗에게 사절단과 함께 향백나무와 목수와 석수들을 보내어, 다윗에게 궁을 지어 주게 하였다. (사무엘기 하권 5,11)

이런 배경에서 향백나무는 왕실의 상징처럼 되어 예언자 예레미야와 에제키엘은 다윗 왕실을 레바논에 비유하기도 했습니다.

유다 왕실을 두고 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ′너는 내게 길앗과도 같고 레바논 산 꼭대기와도 같으나 맹세코 내가 너를 광야로 만들고 아무도 살지 않는 성읍들로 만들리라.
(예레미야서 22,6)

For thus says the LORD concerning the palace of the king of Judah: Though you be to me like Gilead, like the peak of Lebanon, I will turn you into a waste, a city uninhabited. (Jeremiah 22,6)

레바논에 자리 잡고 향백나무들 가운데 보금자리를 마련한 자야 해산하는 여인의 진통과 같은 고통이 너에게 닥칠 때 너는 얼마나 괴롭게 신음할까? (예레미야서 22,23)

You who dwell on Lebanon, who nest in the cedars, How you shall groan when pains come upon you, like the pangs of a woman in travail! (Jeremiah 22,23)

너는 말하여라.  주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 큰 날개와 긴 깃이 달리고 울긋불긋한 깃털로 가득한 큰 독수리 한 마리가 레바논으로 갔다. 향백나무의 꼭대기 순을 따고 (에제키엘서 17,3)

Thus speaks the Lord GOD: The great eagle, with great wings, with long pinions, with thick plumage, many-hued, came to Lebanon. He took the crest of the cedar, (Ezekiel 17,3)

주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 내가 손수 높은 향백나무의 꼭대기 순을 따서 심으리라. 가장 높은 가지들에서 연한 것을 하나 꺾어 내가 손수 높고 우뚝한 산 위에 심으리라. 이스라엘의 드높은 산 위에 그것을 심어 놓으면 햇가지가 나고 열매를 맺으며 훌륭한 향백나무가 되리라. 온갖 새들이 그 아래 깃들이고 온갖 날짐승이 그 가지 그늘에 깃들이리라. 그제야 들의 모든 나무가 알게 되리라. 높은 나무는 낮추고 낮은 나무는 높이며 푸른 나무는 시들게 하고 시든 나무는 무성하게 하는 이가 나 주님임을 알게 되리라. 나 주님은 말하고 그대로 실천한다. (에제키엘서 17,22-24)

And all the trees of the field shall know that I, the LORD, Bring low the high tree, lift high the lowly tree, Wither up the green tree, and make the withered tree bloom. 하지만, 급격하게 산림이 파괴되어, 현재 남아있는 12개 삼나무 숲은 유네스코 세계자연유산으로 지정돼 보호받고 있습니다. 그마저 기후변화에 따른 조치가 제대로 되지 않아 우려를 낳고 있다고 합니다.

길가메시 서사시에서 '삼나무 숲을 파괴하면 문명이 붕괴할 것'이란 경고가 등장한다는데, 혹자는 무자비한 산림 파괴 때문에 지금의 레바논이 고통 받는 것이라 주장하기도 합니다.

□ 신화, 전설

● 메소포타미아 신화(Mesopotamian mythology): 길가메시 서사시(Epic of Gilgamesh)

수메르, 바빌로니아 등 고대 동양 여러 민족 사이에 알려진 전설적 영웅 길가메시(Gilgamesh)는 우루크 제1왕조 제5대 왕이었으나 뒤에는 전설적인 인물이 되었습니다.

길가메시는 3분의 2가 신이고 3분의 1이 인간인데, 지나치게 혈기왕성하고 여성을 탐했으며, 거만했습니다. 이에 보다 못한 우루크의 주민들은 신들에게 도움을 청했죠. 신들은 길가메시의 힘을 약화시키기 위해 엔키두(Enkidu)라는 이름의 남자를 창조했습니다.

하지만, 그는 길가메시 보다 난폭하고 거칠어서 더욱 골치 아픈 존재가 되었습니다. 결국 길가메시는 우루크 주민들을 돕기 위해 사랑과 전쟁의 여신 이난나(인안나, 이슈타르)의 여사제 샤마트를 보냈습니다.

샤마트는 인간 여성과 관계를 맺어본 적이 없는 엔키두에게 쾌락을 가르칩니다. 7일 밤낮으로 함께 지내면서 엔키두는 머리카락을 제외한 털이 모두 빠졌습니다.

샤마트와 함께 마을의 결혼잔치에 도착한 엔키두는, 초야권을 행사하기 위해 온 길가메시와 격렬한 몸싸움을 벌이게 되고, 길가메시에게 패하게 되죠. 이후 엔키두는 길가메시의 변함없는 친구이자 동료가 되어 호사스럽게 지내게 됩니다.

이후 길가메시는 신들에게서 고향을 떠나 반신반인(半神半人, demigod) 훔바바(c)와 싸우라는 지시를 받습다. 훔바바는 우루크에서 2만 시간을 가야 겨우 도착하는 삼나무 숲(Cedar Forest)에 사는 무시무시한 괴물이자 삼림의 수호자였습니다.

두 사람은 삼나무 숲에 들어섰고 마침내 훔바바의 둥지를 발견했습니다. 길가메시와 엔키두는 훔바바에게 달려들었고, 격렬한 싸움 끝에 두 남자는 신 샤마슈의 도움을 받아 괴물을 물리쳤습니다. 치명상을 입힌 것은 엔키두의 창이었습니다. 훔바바는 길가메시와 엔키두에게 목숨을 구걸하고 샤마슈도 길가메시에게 훔바바를 살려줄 것을 권합니다. 그러나 엔키두는 길가메시에게 훔바바를 죽여야 명예를 얻을 수 있다고 부추키죠. 길가메시는 결국 훔바바를 죽입니다.

곧이어 길가메시는 여신 이난나의 유혹을 받습니다. 길가메시가 이난나의 옛 애인들의 비참한 운명을 거론하며 그녀를 거절하자 분노한 이난나는 이누에게 호소했습니다. 결국 이누를 설득한 이난나는 길가메시와 맞설 하늘의 황소를 손에 넣었습니다. 하지만 엔키두가 황소를 붙잡았고 길가메시가 칼로 찔러 죽이고 맙니다. 황소가 살해당한 것에 분노한 신들은 엔키두를 병에 걸리게 하여 보복했습니다. 며칠 후 엔키두는 죽어버리고 말았죠.

이에 길가메시는 친구의 죽음을 애통함과 상심, 그리고 공포를 느끼게 됩니다. 이후 죽지 않는 비결을 찾아 헤매게 되죠. 그는 멀리 성자(聖者)의 섬에 사는 우트나피시팀(지우수드라)을 만납니다. 우트나피시팀은 바빌로니아의 노아라고도 합니다. 이곳에서 우트나피시팀은 옛날 신이 일으켰던 대홍수 이야기를 하죠. 성서의 노아의 홍수에 해당하는 내용입니다.
그러나 그도 죽지 않는 비결은 알지 못하고 인간에게 죽음이란 잠처럼 필요한 것이라고 말하죠. 길가메시가 고향으로 돌아가기 전 우트나피시팀은 대신 불로초를 바다에서 캐는 방법을 가르쳐 줍니다. 길가메시는 이 풀을 캐 가지고 집으로 돌아가다가 잠시 쉬고 있는 사이에 뱀이 이 불로초를 먹어버려 빈손으로 슬픔에 잠겨 우루크 성으로 돌아오게 됩니다.

삼나무속(Cryptomeria)은 낙우송속(Taxodium)과 메타세콰이아속(Metasequoia) 등과 함께 낙우송과(Taxodiaceae)로 분류되었는데, 이들 속과 비교하여 잎은 바늘형으로 납작하지 않고 상록성이며, 구과는 실편수가 20개 이상으로 많습니다. 엽록체 DNA 서열을 이용한 분자계통분석 결과 광의의 측백나무과로 통합되었다고 합니다.

삼나무는 현재 지구상에 존재하는 생명체 중 가장 키가 크다고 알려져있습니다. 세계에서 키가 가장 큰 삼나무는 미국 캘리포니아 세콰이어 국립공원에 있다고 합니다. 이곳의 삼나무는 키가 80미터, 둘레가 30미터, 몸무게는 1,260톤으로 추정되는데, 나이는 정확하게 알 수 없지만 최대 3천 년 이상까지 산다고 합니다.

삼나무는 수령이 길기 때문에 각종 전설이 깃들여 있는 종류가 많습니다.

세계에서 가장 오래된 바빌로니아의 서사시 '길가메시 서사시(기원전 2000년경)'에도 삼나무와 관련한 신화가 등장합니다.

우리나라에서는 삼나무가 낙우송과 비슷한 시기인 1924년에 본격적으로 도입되었는데, 삼나무를 소나무와 잣나무보다 높이 평가했습니다. 삼나무가 가지 없이 아주 높이 올라가기 때문이었다고 합니다.
