꽃말: 넘치는 기쁨 (exuberant rejoicing)

나팔꽃은 메꽃과의 한해살이 덩굴식물입니다. 메꽃과(Convolvulaceae)의 1,000여종이 Morning Glory라고 불리며, 메꽃과를 morning glory family라고 부르기도 합니다.

미국나팔꽃속(이포메아속, Ipomoea)은 약 500여종으로 메꽃과에서 가장 많은 종이 포함되어 있는 속(屬, Genus)입니다. 속명인 이포메아(Ipomoea)는 식물체 전체에 털이 나고, 다른 식물체를 탱탱 감으면서 올라가는 양상에서 비롯한다고 합니다.

나팔꽃은 약재로 많이 쓰입니다. 한방에서는 말린 나팔꽃 종자를 견우자(牽牛子)라고 하는데, 푸르거나 붉은 나팔꽃의 종자를 흑축(黑丑), 흰 나팔꽃의 종자를 백축(白丑)이라고 합니다. 대소변을 통하게 하고, 부종, 적취(積聚), 요통 등에 효과가 있다고 합니다. 민간에서는 동상에 걸렸을 때 이것을 달인 물로 환부를 찜질했었다고 합니다.
