금잔화속(Calendula), 천수국속(Tagetes), 멕시코해바라기속(Tithonia) 등 여러 속에 속한 여러 종이 매리골드(Marigold)라고 불립니다.

천수국속 중에서 Tagetes erecta가 African marigold로, Tagetes patula가 French marigold로, Tagetes lucida가 Mexican marigold로, Tagetes tenuifolia가 Signet marigold로, Tagetes minuta는 southern marigold 또는 wild marigold로 불립니다.

타게테스(Tagetes)라는 속명은 에트루니아(Etruria)의 신화에 아이같은 모습을 하고 있는, 아름다운 신 타게스(Tages)에서 유래했다고 합니다.

프렌치 품종[French marigold, (학명)Tagetes patula]에는 만수국(萬壽菊), 아프리칸 품종[African marigold, (학명)Tagetes erecta]에는 천수국(千壽菊)이라는 별칭이 있습니다. 만수국, 천수국은 꽃이 피는 기간이 길어서 붙여진 이름이라고 합니다.

로마인들이 달의 초하루를 calendae라고 했으며 이것을 1개월로 하였는데, 꽃이 1개월 동안 피는 데서 속명의 Calendula가 유래했다고 합니다. 동양에서는 머리모양꽃차례(capitulum, head)의 모양이 술잔같기 때문에 금잔화(金盞花)라고 불리웠다고 합니다.
