● 죽음의 꽃, 극락의 꽃

그리스 신화에서 아스포델(asphodel)은 죽은 이들 및 지하세계와 관련된  유명한 꽃 중 하나였습니다.

그리스 신화에서 엘리시움(Elysium)의 들판에 피는 영원히 지지 않는 신비로운 꽃의 이름이기도 합니다. 엘리시움을 아스포델의 들판(Asphodel Meadows)라고 부리기도 했습니다. 그리스 사람들은 선한 사람은 죽어서 엘리시움으로 가고, 악한 사람은 타르타로스(Tartaros)로 간다고 믿었다고 합니다.

● 수선화

아스포델로스는 중세 라틴어에서 아포딜루스(affodillus)로 변형이 되며, 여기에 D가 첨가되면서 daffodil(수선화)이라는 단어가 만들어진 것으로 추측하고 있습니다.
