알로에는 알로에속(Aloe)에 속하는 식물 전체를 통칭합니다. 이 중 알로에베라(Aloe vera)만을 지칭하기도 하며, 알로에베라를 진짜 알로에(true aloe)라고 부르기도 합니다. 알로에베라의 종소명인 vers는 진짜, 진정한(true, genuine) 등의 뜻을 지닙니다.

일반적인 이름이자 속명이기도 한 알로에는 아라비아어로 맛이 쓰다는 뜻으로 붙여진 이름이고, 노회(蘆薈)란 Aloe의 로에를 한자로 음차(音借)한 이름입니다.

알로에는 고대 이집트 왕조 시대부터 이용되었으며, 마케도니아의 알렉산더 대왕은 원정 시에 병사들의 질병을 막기 위해 알로에를 사용하였다고 전해지고 있습니다. 다만, 약용으로 사용되는 알로에는 5백 종이 넘는 알로에속 식물 중 6∼7종에 불과합니다.

● 죽음의 꽃, 극락의 꽃

그리스 신화에서 아스포델(asphodel)은 죽은 이들 및 지하세계와 관련된  유명한 꽃 중 하나였습니다.

그리스 신화에서 엘리시움(Elysium)의 들판에 피는 영원히 지지 않는 신비로운 꽃의 이름이기도 합니다. 엘리시움을 아스포델의 들판(Asphodel Meadows)라고 부리기도 했습니다. 그리스 사람들은 선한 사람은 죽어서 엘리시움으로 가고, 악한 사람은 타르타로스(Tartaros)로 간다고 믿었다고 합니다.

● 수선화

아스포델로스는 중세 라틴어에서 아포딜루스(affodillus)로 변형이 되며, 여기에 D가 첨가되면서 daffodil(수선화)이라는 단어가 만들어진 것으로 추측하고 있습니다.
