미술관 건물은 알버트 쉬케단츠(Albert Schickedanz)와 Fülöp Herzog의 설계로 1900년과 1906년 사이에 지어졌습니다. 절충적 신고전주의(eclectic-neoclassical) 양식이라고 합니다.

고흐가 말년인 1890년에 자신의 정신과 의사이자 친구인 가셰 박사를 그린 초상화는 두 가지 버전이 있었습니다.

빈센트 반 고흐(Vincent van Gogh, 1853-1890), 가세 박사의 초상(Portrait du docteur Gachet; Portrait of Dr. Gachet) 첫 번째 버전(1st version), Auvers-sur-Oise, June 1890, 캔버스에 유채(oil on canvas), 67x56cm, 개인 소장(Private collection)

첫 번째 버전은 작품이 그려진지 약 100년이 지난 1990년에 미화 8,250만 달러(현재 가치 환산 시 1억 7,110만 달러)로 당시 기준으로 경매 사상 세계 최고가로 사이토 료에이 회장에게 팔립니다. 그리고, 사이토 회장의 사후 행방이 묘연해 집니다. 유언대로 같이 화장되었는지 유족들이 여전히 보관하고 있는지 알려지지 않았습니다.

두 번째 버전의 경우 오르세 미술관에 보관되어 있습니다. 하지만, 두 번째 버전 작품은 고흐가 아닌 가셰 박사가 그린 것으로 의심받기도 합니다.

많은 사람들이 빈센트 반 고흐(Vincent van Gogh)의 마지막 작품이라고 생각하는 작품입니다. (자살 시도였는지 사고였는지는 모르지만) 밀밭에서 그림을 그리다가 총에 맞았다는 이야기가 있어서 그때 그리던 그림이 이 그림일거라고 추측하는 것 같습니다. 하지만, 역사가들은 정확히 어느 작품이 마지막 작품인지 확실치 않다는 입장인데, 빈센트의 편지를 볼 때, 이 작품이 완성된 것은 7월 10일 경일 거라고 추정합니다.

오베르 시청(The Town Hall at Auvers)은 그가 머물던 오베르 쉬르 우아즈(Auvers-sur-Oise)의 시청을 그린 그림으로 1890년 7월 14일 완성된 작품입니다. 완성이라고 표현은 했지만, 혹자는 빈센트의 다작의 비결이 그림을 끝내고 다른 그림을 그린 것이 아니라 여러 작품을 동시에 그렸기 때문이라고 하고 7월 중순에 그린 이 그림은 그의 마직막 작품은 아니지만, 완성되지는 못한 미완의 작품이라고 보기도 합니다.

빈센트는 오베르 쉬르 우아즈 등에서 여러 점의 밀밭을 그립니다. 그는 단조로와 보일 수도 있는 밀밭을 다양한 색채로 표현하고, 붓터치를 통해 역동감을 부여하였습니다. 

위 그림 수레국화가 있는 밀밭(Wheatfield With Cornflowers)에서 청색 점으로 표시되어 있는 것이 수레국화(cornflowers)입니다.

비오는 날 오베르의 풍경은 비 오는 날 오베르-수-와즈(Auvers-sur-Oise)의 모습을 담은 그림입니다. 1890년 6월 17일부터 7월 27일까지 빈센트는 더블스퀘어 캔버스(double-square canvas)에 오베르의 풍경을 담은 작품 13점을 완성하였는데, 그 중 하나입니다.

이 작품은 죽기 3일 전에 완성하였다고 합니다. 어느 작품이 가장 마지막 작품인지는 여전히 논란이 있으나, 그가 죽기 전 마지막에 그렸던 작품들 중 하나로 이야기 됩니다.

1886년 빈센트는 동생 테오가 있는 파리로 옵니다. 어둡던 그의 화풍은 파리에 있는 동안 인상주의와 일본 우키요에(浮世繪) 판화의 영향을 받으면서 밝은 화풍으로 바뀝니다.

1887년은 그가 파리 생활을 보내고 있을 때였죠.
