Vincent van Gogh (1889)

1888년 12월 빈센트는 고갱과 다투고 나서 면도칼로 자기의 귀를 잘라버렸고, 고갱과의 생활도 끝이나죠. 그 후 빈센트는 정신적으로 매우 불안정했고, 아를에 있는 병원에 입원합니다.

그리고, 1889년 5월에 아를에서 30km도 안 떨어져 있는 생 레미(Saint-Rémy)의 세이트 폴 요양원(Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum)으로 들어갑니다. 그리고, 1890년 5월에 생 레미를 떠나 의사 폴 가쳇(Dr Paul Gachet)과 동생 테오 근처로 옮겨 갑니다.

고흐는 1888년부터 1890년까지 이른 봄에 꽃 그림들을 많이 그렸습니다. 이런 개화하는 나무들은 고흐에게 긍정적인 마음과 희망을 심어주었습니다.

꽃이 핀 복숭아 나무(Peach Trees in Blossom)는 1889년 4월에 완성한 작품입니다. 아를 근처 라크로(La Crau) 평원에 꽃이 핀 복숭아 나무들이 있는 모습을 그렸습니다.

병원에서 생활하며, 빈센트는 병원의 정원에 있는 아이리스를 주제로 여러 점의 작품을 남깁니다.

1889년 5월에 아이리스가 무리지어 있는 모습을 그린 아이리스(Irises)와 한 송이만 집중해서 그린 아이리스(The Iris)가 대표적입니다. 

두 작품은 모두 일본 우키요에 목판화(ukiyo-e woodblock prints)의 영향을 받은 것으로 보입니다. 

아이리스(Irises)는 아이리스를 클로즈업하면서 밝은 부분이 그림의 테두리로 밀려나 있는 구도로 그렸습니다. 이 작품과 관련된 데셍 작품이 알려져 있지 않아서, 이 그림이 일종의 습작이었을 거라고 보기도 합니다.

빈센트의 동생인 테오(Theo)는 이 작품을 1889년 9월 독립 예술가 협회(Société des Artistes Indépendants)의 연례 전시회에 출품합니다.

테오는 다음과 같은 편지를 남기죠.

"[It] strikes the eye from afar. The Irises are a beautiful study full of air and life."

"(이 작품은) 멀리서도 눈에 띄었어. 아이리스는 기운과 생명이 가득찬 아름다운 작품이야."

한 송이 아이리스(The Iris)는 아이리스를 그린 두 번째 작품으로 아이리스들이 모두 다 활짝 피기 전에 먼저 핀 아이리스 한 송이를 집중해서 그린 것으로 추정됩니다. 배경의 풀들의 붓터치는 마치 풀들이 아이리스를 향하는 햇살처럼 느끼게 합니다.

1889년 12월 빈센트가 그린 정신병원의 정원(Garden of the Asylum, 1889) 또는 성 바오로 병원의 정원(Garden of the Hospital Saint-Paul)이라고 불리는 이 그림은 병원의 정원을 그린 유화입니다.

당시 빈센트는 친구 베르나르에게 이렇게 적었다고 하는데, 이 그림을 묘사하는 글일 거라고 추측됩니다. 

"This dark giant — like a proud man brought low — contrasts, when seen as the character of a living being, with the pale smile of the last rose on the bush, which is fading in front of him. Under the trees, empty stone benches, dark box. The sky is reflected yellow in a puddle after the rain. A ray of sun — the last glimmer — exalts the dark ochre to orange — small dark figures prowl here and there between the trunks."

To Emile Bernard. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, on or about Tuesday, 26 November 1889.

"자부심 많은 몰락한 사람처럼 이 어두운 거인은 대비시켜. 살아있는 존재의 인물처럼 보일 때 덤불에 있는 마지막 장미의 창백한 미소를. 그것은 그의 앞에서 점점 희미해지지지. 나무 아래에서 빈 돌의자는 어두운 박스. 하늘은 비온 뒤 물웅덩이에 노랗게 반사되지. 마지막으로 희미하게 빛나는 햇빛은 어두운 황토색을 주황빛으로 더 돋보이게 해. 작고 어두운 인물은 나무 몸통 사이로 여기저기 돌아다니지."

에밀 베르나르에게

이 시기 빈센트는 색상을 이용해 느낌을 표현할 수 있다는 사실을 깨달았다고 합니다. 그는 조화를 이루는 색과 대조를 이루는 색을 사용하여 작품에 감동을 더했습니다.
