빈센트는 1888년 2월에는 대도시 생활에 싫증을 느껴 프랑스 아를로 옮깁니다. 여기에서 많은 작품 활동을 합니다. 

작품적으로는 이때부터 2년 간이 열정적으로 많은 작품을 그리기 시작한 기간이지만, 정신적으로 어려움을 겪은 시간이기도 하죠.

 

그는 새로운 예술촌 건설을 꿈꿨고, 아를에서 폴 고갱과의 공동생활이 시작되었습니다. 하지만, 두 사람은 워낙 달랐고, 두 사람의 공동생활은 오래가지 못합니다.

결국 1888년 12월 빈센트는 고갱과 다투고 나서 면도칼로 자기의 귀를 잘라버렸고, 고갱과의 생활도 끝이나죠. 

그 후 빈센트는 정신적으로 매우 불안정했고, 아를에 있는 병원에 입원합니다.

몽마주르가 보이는 크로 들판의 추수(Harvest at La Crau, with Montmajour in the Background) 또는 추수(The harvest)라고 불리는 이 작품은 고흐가 1888년 6월에 그린 그림입니다.

이때는 고흐가 남프랑스 프로방스 지방의 해안 마을 생트마리드라메르(Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer)를 방문했다가 아를로 돌아온 직후이며, 아를의 노란 집에서 고갱과 공동체 생활을 기다리던 시기입니다.
