미국 워싱턴 D.C.(Washington, D.C.)의 National Mall에 위치하고 있습니다. 

미국 재무부 장관을 역임한 금융업자이자 예술품 수집가인 앤드류 멜론(Andrew W. Melon)이 그의 수집품을 기증하면서 1937년 설립되었으며, 미술관으로 개관한 것은 1941년입니다. 이후, 앤드류 멜론 외에도 많은 사람들이 작품을 기증하였습니다.

미술관은 중세부터 현재까지 이어지는 서양미술작품 15만여 점을 소장 및 전시하고 있습니다. 

소장품의 숫자도 많지만 소장품 중에 피렌체파(Scuola Fiorentina) 화가들과 프랑스 인상파(Impressionist) 화가들의 작품들은 세계적인 수준이라고 합니다. 

특히, 레오나르도 다 빈치(Leonardo da Vinci)의 지네브라 데 벤치의 초상(Ginevra de' Benci, 1474-1478 경)은 레오나르도 다 빈치의 작품 중 미주 대륙에 있는 유일한 작품이라고 합니다.

그 외에도 엘 그레코(El Greco, 1541–1614)의 라오콘(Laocoön, 1610-1614), 라파엘로(Raphael, 1483–1520)의 알바공의 마돈나(L'Alba Madonna; The Alba Madonna, 1510 경), 클로드 모네(Claude Monet, 1840–1926)의 파라솔을 든 여인(Woman with a Parasol, 1875)과 루앙성당 연작(Rouen Cathedral, West Facade, Sunlight; Le Portail, soleil, 1894), 빈센트 반 고흐(Vincent van Gogh, 1853–1890)의 자화상(Self-portrait, 1889), 폴 고갱(Paul Gauguin, 1848–1903)의 광륜과 뱀이 있는 자화상(Autoportrait-charge, ou Autoportrait au nimbe; Self-Portrait with Halo, 1889), 파블로 피카소(Pablo Picasso, 1881-1973)의 정물화(Still Life, 1918) 등 유명한 작품들이 많습니다.

클로드 모네(Claude Monet, 1840–1926)의 1875년 작품 '파라솔을 든 여인 - 모네 부인과 아들(Woman with a Parasol - Madame Monet and Her Son; La Femme à l'ombrelle — Madame Monet et son fils)'입니다. 산책(The Stroll; La Promenade)으로 불리기도 합니다.

모네는 1871년 부터 1877년까지 아르장퇴유에서 지내며 첫번째 부인인 카미유 동시외(Camille Doncieux)와 큰 아들 장 모네(Jean Monet)를 모델로 야외에서 많은 작품을 남겼으며, 이 작품도 그 중 하나입니다.

따뜻한 색채와 흐르는 듯한 구름을 보면 햇살이 따가운 여름에 불어오는 온화한 여름 바람이 느껴집니다.
