시계꽃속(Passiflora)을 총칭하는 영문명인 passion flower의 passion은 기독교에서 그리스도의 수난(passion of Jesus)에서 왔습니다. 15~16세기 경 스페인 선교사가 남미에서 발견 후 붙인 이름이라고 합니다.
