쌍떡잎식물 가지목 가지과의 여러해살이풀.

이 식물의 열매를 꽈리라고 하는데, 빨갛게 익은 다음 씨를 빼내어 입에 넣고 공기를 채웠다가 아랫입술과 윗니로 지그시 누르면 소리가 나서 옛날 어린이들에게는 좋은 놀이감이 되었습니다.

꽈리는 독이 있어서 식용으로 사용되지는 않습니다. 전체를 말린 것을 한방에서 산장(酸漿)이라 하며 해열약으로 쓰기도 합니다.
