재스민향과 같은 황홀한 향기가 강렬한데 특히 야간에 그 향이 더욱 깊습니다. 꽃 기부에 20~35센티미터(cm)에 달하는 긴 꿀샘관이 있는 것이 특징입니다.
다윈의 난(Darwin's orchid)이라고도 불립니다. 영국의 생물학자 찰스 다윈은 독특한 생물이 많이 서식하는 마다가스카르 섬에서 1862년 앙그라이쿰 세스퀴페달레(Angraecum sesquipedale)라는 난을 관찰하게 됩니다. 이 난의 꿀은 20센티미터가 넘는 긴 관 속에 있는데, 이를 관찰하면서 다윈은 이 식물의 수정을 돕기 위해 관과 비슷한 길이의 입을 가진 곤충이 있을 것이라고 가설을 세웠으나 당시에는 받아들여지지 않았습니다. 그런데, 다윈이 사망한 후 이 난의 매개충인 크산토판모르가니 프레딕타(Xanthopanmorgani predicta)라는 나방이 발견되면서, 다윈의 가설이 확인되었다는 일화가 있습니다.
