国立西洋美術館

국립서양미술관

줄여서 NMWA로 표기하는 일본의 국립서양미술관은 1959년 설립되었으며, 이름처럼 서양미술에 특화된 미술관입니다.

우에노 공원(上野公園, Ueno Park) 안에 위치하는데 이곳에는 미술관 외에 동물원도 있습니다.

미술관이 소장하고 있는 작품들은 르네상스 부터 20세기 초반에 걸쳐 있습니다. 중심된 작품들은 일본 기업인인 마츠가타 고우지로(松方幸次郎, Matsukata Kojiro, 1865–1950)의 컬렉션입니다.

미술관의 설립 및 운영 목적이 대중에게 서양미술을 감상할 수 있는 기회를 더 많이 주자는 것인 만큼, 미술관 설립 후로도 꾸준히 작품을 구입하여 소장 작품을 늘려가고 있으며, 현재에는  4,500여점을 소장하고 있습니다.

메리힐 미술관은 미국 워싱톤(Washington) 주 Maryhill 근처에 있는 미술관으로 규모는 작지만(small), 다양한 작품(eclectic collection)을 소장하고 있습니다.

건물은 혼블로어 앤 마샬(Hornblower and Marshall)의 설계로 지어졌으며, 원래는 기업가였던 사무엘 힐(Samuel Hill, 1857-1931)이 저택(mansion)으로 사용할 목적으로 지었다고 합니다. Maryhill은 사무엘 힐의 아내 이름을 따서 붙여진 이름이라고 하네요.

미술관은 1940년 힐의 생일날 개관하였습니다.

소장품으로는 조각작품 중에는 칼레의 시민(The Burghers of Calais), 생각하는 사람(The Thinker), 지옥의 문(The Gates of Hell) 등 로댕(Auguste Rodin)의 작품이 유명합니다.

유럽과 미국의 회화작품 중에는 윌리엄 맥그리거 팩스턴(William McGregor Paxton), 로버트 헤일 아이브스 갬멜(R. H. Ives Gammell), 윌리엄 스탠리 헤이절타인(William Stanley Haseltine), 프레데릭 레이튼(Frederic Leighton, 1st Baron Leighton), 에드윈 블래시필드(Edwin Blashfield) 등의 작품이 주목할 만합니다.

또한, 미술관 동쪽 끝에 있는 메리힐 스톤헨지(Maryhill Stonehenge)로도 알려져 있습니다. 세계1차대전 희생자들을 기념하기 위해 만든 이곳은 영국의 스톤헨지를 본따 만든 콘크리트 구조물입니다.

빈센트 반고흐

빈센트 반 고흐의 부친이 뉘넨에서 목사를 하게 되며, 1882년 고흐의 가족들은 뉘뉜으로 이사를 합니다. 그리고, 1883년 12월 빈센트는 가족들과 함께 살기 위해 뉘넨(Nuenen)으로 이사를 하고, 이곳에서 1885년 5월까지 살았습니다.

1884년 빈센트는 뉘넨(Nuenen)에서 장인(匠人)이나 노동자, 농민들의 일상적인 삶을 그리기 시작합니다.

가지치기한 나무(Têtards; Pollards) 또는 버드나무와 구름 사이로 햇살이 비치는 풍경(Landscape with Willows and Sun Shining Through the Clouds)이라고 이름 붙여진 이 그림은 빈센트가 1884년 3월 뉘넨(Nuenen)에서 완성한 소묘(drawing) 작품입니다.

갈색 잉크의 펜(Pen and brown ink)으로 주로 그렸는데, 그 외에도 검은색 잉크의 펜(pen and black ink), 목탄(graphite), 목탄 프로타주(graphite frottage), 검은색 분필(black chalk) 등도 사용하였습니다.

1884년 10월에 고흐는 테오에게 보낸 편지에서 다음과 같은 말을 남겼습니다.

The last thing I made is a rather large study of an avenue of poplars with the yellow autumn leaves, where the sun makes glittering patches here and there on the fallen leaves on the ground, which are interspersed with the long shadows cast by the trunks.

At the end of the road a peasant cottage, and the blue sky above it between the autumn leaves.

To Theo van Gogh. Nuenen, on or about Saturday, 25 October 1884.

내가 만든 마지막 것은 노란색 가을 잎을 지닌 포플러 나무에 대한 다소 거대한 연구였어. 그곳에서 태양은 반짝이며 겹쳐지고 바닥에는 낙엽이 높여있지. 그것들은 나무가 만드는 기다란 그림자 사이에 놓여있어.

길의 끝에는 소작농의 작은 집 하나와 그 위에 놓은 파란 하늘이 가을의 잎들 사이로 있지.

1884년 10월 25일 테오에게 보낸 편지 중에서

네덜란드 림뷔르흐주에 있는 도시인 헤넙에 있는 물레방앗간(Water Mill at Gennep)을 주제로 빈센트 반 고흐는 1884년에 3점의 유화와 1점의 수채화를 제작하였습니다.

그 중 1884년 11월에 이 그림을 그린 후 테오에게 다음과 같은 글을 썼습니다.

"Yesterday I brought home that study of the water mill at Gennep, which I painted with pleasure, and which has procured me a new friend in Eindhoven [Anton Kerssemakers], who passionately wants to learn to paint, and to whom I paid a visit, after which we set to work at once."

어제 나는 작업 중이던 헤넵에 있는 물레방안갓 작품을 집으로 가져왔어. 나는 기쁨에 넘쳐 색을 칠했지. 그건 내게 에인트호번에 있는 새로운 친구를 찾게 해 주었어. 그는 열정적으로 그림을 배우기를 원했지. 그리고 나는 그를 방문하였고, 즉시 작업을 시작했어."

여기서 말한 에인트호번의 새로운 친구는 아마추어 화가 안톤 케르스마커스(Anton Kerssemakers, 1846-1924)라고 합니다.
