아름다움

꽃이름 양귀비는 당나라 현종의 황후이며, 중국 4대 미녀 중 한 명이라 불리는 양귀비에 비길 만큼 꽃이 아름답다고 해서 지어진 이름이라고 합니다.

그리스 로마 신화에도 양귀비와 관련된 내용이 있습니다. 곡물과 대지의 여신인 데메테르(Demeter)의 딸 페르세포네(Persephone) 저승의 지배자인 하데스(Hades)한테 납치됩니다. 데메테르는 딸을 찾아 헤매다가 이 꽃을 꺾어서 스스로 위안을 찾았다고 합니다. 로마 신화에서는 농업의 여신 케레스(Ceres)가 데메테르와 동일시됩니다.

잠

양귀비의 또다른 이름인 Papaver는 옛 라틴명으로 papa(죽)이라는 뜻이라고 합니다. 양귀비의 유액(乳液)에 최면제가 들어 있어 죽에 양귀비를 섞어서 아기를 잠재운데에서 유래했다고 합니다.

로마 신화의 잠의 신인 솜누스(Somnus)는 여신 켈레스에게, 그녀를 잠들게 하기 위해서 양귀비를 주었다고 합니다. 양귀비의 학명 Papaver somniferum의 somniferum은 '잠을 불러오는 것'이라는 의미라고 합니다.

죽음과 부활

양귀비와 안면과의 관계는 죽음과 부활로도 이어집니다. 이는 그리스도교 세계에도 이어지는데, 거기에서 양귀비는 천국에서의 잠을 의미하고, 진홍빛 양귀비는 그리스도의 피와 부활에 대한 약속을 상징한다고 보기도 합니다.

고대인들은 죽음과 부활이 모두 대지에서 시작된다고 보았기 때문에 이는 자연스레 오래 전부터 대지의 여신인 데메테르 여신의 상징이 되어 왔습니다. 데메테르 여신과 관련된 또다른 신화는 아테네 출신의 평범한 젊은이 메콘(Mecon)은 데메테르 여신의 사랑을 받았습니다. 하지만, 메콘이 젊은 나이에 죽게 되자, 슬픔에 빠진 데메테르는 메콘을 양귀비꽃으로 변신시켜서 영원히 자신의 곁에 두었다고 합니다. 메콘이라는 이름도 고대 그리스어와 라틴어로 양귀비(Poppy)를 뜻한다고 합니다.

다산과 풍요

그리스 신화에서 양귀비와 관련된 데케테르나, 로마신화에서 솜누스에게 양귀비를 받은 켈레스는 모두 대지와 곡물의 여신입니다. 죽음과 부활을 의미하는 동시에 다산과 풍요를 상징하기도 합니다.

이러한 양귀비의 효능은 중추신경계통에 작용하며 진통, 진정작용이 뛰어나고 해소에 특효를 나타냅니다. 또한, 이질, 설사에 지사효과가 있다고 합니다. 복통, 기관지염, 만성장염, 불면 등의 질환에 복용하면 빠른 효과를 나타내죠. 다만, 중독성 있는 마약성분으로 인해 많은 국가에서 재배와 관련 제한을 두고 있습니다.

감시자들 (Cold Eyes, 2013)

2007년 홍콩 영화인 천공의 눈을 원작으로 하는 본 영화는 경찰 내 특수조직 감시반을 소재로 하고 있습니다. 감시반은 감시만을 전문적으로 담당하는 영화속 가상의 조직으로 눈으로 보는 모든 것을 기억해야 하죠. 영화가 개봉했을 때 많은 사람들이 실제 경찰에 감시반이 있는지 궁금해했다고 합니다.

주위에 원작 천공의 눈이 낫다는 사람들도 있고, 감시자들이 더 낫다는 사람들도 있는데... 원작을 안 봐서 비교는 못하겠고, 설령 봤어도 굳이 비교할 필요가 있나 싶기는 합니다.

이 작품만 보면 소재는 신선합니다. 최근에는 드론을 비롯한 최첨단 감시장비가 영화 속에 많이 등장하지만, 여전히 사람이 직접 보고 기억하는 아날로그적인 접근은 나름 참신하다고 할 수 있죠.

소재의 참신성에 비해 전체적인 이야기 구조는 조금 단순해 보입니다. 단점일 수도 있겠지만, 너무 꼬인 복잡한 영화가 머리 아픈 분들은 좋아할 수 있을 겁니다. 다소 단순한 구조이지만 나름 짜임새있게 풀어나가며, 장면장면 연출도 지루하지 않습니다. 관객들은 범인이 누구인지 아는 상태에서 주인공들이 그 범인을 찾아가는 형식이다 보니 연출의 힘이 더 중요하기도 하죠.

약간 싱거운 맛이 있으나 전반적으로 잘 만들어진 영화입니다.

IMF에 의하면, 미국의 취업자수는 2015년 149백만명에서 2020년 159백만명으로 5년간 6.78%(연평균 1.32%) 증가가 예상됩니다.

반면 한국의 취업자수는 2015년 26백만명에서 2020년 27백만명으로 5년간 2.80%(연평균 0.55%) 증가에 그칠 것으로 예상되죠.

미국과 뉴욕의 비농업 부문 취업자 수 증가율을 보면, 뉴욕의 비농업 부문 취업자 수 증가율은 2000년대 중반까지는 미국 평균을 하회하였으나, 2006년대 중반 이후 미국 평균을 상회하고 있습니다.

IMF에 의하면, 2018년 미국의 실업률은 3.89%로 한국 3.84%와 비슷한 수준입니다. 하지만, 각 국의 고용시장 차이가 존재하므로 절대적인 수치를 단순 비교하는 것 외에 방향성이 중요하다고 할 수 있죠. 호주, 일본, 한국, 중국, 프랑스, 독일, 영국, 미국 등 8개국을 비교해 보면 최근 5년간 다른 나라의 실업률은 지속적으로 하락하고 있으나, 한국의 실업률만 유독 증가하고 있는 모습을 보입니다.

미국 노동통계청(BLS)에 의하면, 미국의 민간부문 실업률과 U4 기준 실업률 모두 지속적으로 하락하고 있습니다.

뉴욕시 및 뉴욕통계지역의 실업률은 미국 전체와 비슷한 움직임을 보입니다. 좀 더 확대해 보면 뉴욕시 및 뉴욕통계지역의 실업률은 미국 전체의 민간부문 실업률을 소폭 상회하고 있으며, 하락세가 주춤한 모습입니다.

※ 실업률은 만 15세 이상의 생산연령인구 중, 학생, 주부, 환자, 군인, 수감자 등 노동할 능력과 의사를 가지고 있지 않은 이들을 제외한 모든 인구인 경제활동인구에서 실업자가 차지하는 비율을 일컫는 말입니다. 산식으로 표현하면 '실업률(%) = 실업자/경제활동인구'입니다.

실업률 산출규정은 국가별로 서로 다른데, 미국, 캐나다, 영국, 한국 등 OECE 국가 중 상당수는 구직활동 기간을 4주로 정하고 있으며, 일본, 대만 등의 경우 1주로 정하고 있습니다.

통계청의 공식 실업률의 경우 구직단념자나 취업준비자가 포함되지 않고, 1주에 1시간만 일해도 취업자로 분류되기 때문에 실질적인 실업률과는 거리가 있습니다.

미국의 경우 이러한 단점을 보완하기 위해 실업을 U1~U6 단계로 구분하고 있습니다. U1~U3이 공식실업률에 포함되는 실업이며, 구직단념자는 U4, 비경제활동인구 중 취업을 희망하고 1년 동안 구직활동이 있었던 한계근로자는 U5, 한계근로자 및 단시간 근로자 중 취업희망자인 불완전 취업자를 포함하면 U6 실업으로 분류합니다. U4~U6 기준 실업률을 실업률 보조지표 또는 유사 실업률이라고 합니다.

미국의 가구소득은 증가하고 있습니다. 개인소득이나 가처분소득도 마찬기지입니다. 물가를 감안하면 명목소득의 증가는 당연하다고 생각할 수도 있겠지만.

실질 기준으로는 변동이 크지만, 2013년 이후 실질 기준 가구소득 역시 상승하는 모습을 보입니다.

미국과 뉴욕주를 비교하였는데, 뉴욕 카운티, 뉴욕 통계지역, 뉴욕주, 미국의 개인소득을 비교하면 2017년 뉴욕 카운티의 연간 개인소득 중간값은 USD 175,960으로 뉴욕MSA USD 71,019이나 뉴욕주 USD 64,540, 미국 USD 51,722를 훨씬 상회합니다.

뉴욕 카운티나 맨하튼의 가구나 개인소득은 절대적으로도 높은 수준이고, 증가율 역시 7.2%로 뉴욕MSA 5.6%, 뉴욕주 5.9% 미국 3.7% 보다 높습니다.

그런데, 들어오는 생각. 뉴욕 지역의 인구 감소. 가구나 개인소득 증가율과 멀티패밀리 임대료 상승율을 비교하면 어느 쪽이 높을까요?

※ 뉴욕(New York)은 주(state) 이름이기도 하지만, 도시(City) 이름이기도 합니다. 뉴욕시(New York City)에는 5개의 자치구(borough)가 있으며, 맨하튼(Manhattan)은 그 중 하나입니다. 자치군(county)과 자치구(borough)는 다른 분류이나 뉴욕시는 자치구 정부(county government)는 별도로 없으며, 5개의 자치구가 각각 자치군과 일치한다고 합니다. 예를 들면, 맨하튼의 경우 맨하튼이라는 자치구인 동시에 뉴욕 카운티(New York County)이기도 합니다.

뉴욕은 도시가 카운티보다 더 큰 지역이지만 언제나 도시 보다 카운티가 더 큰 것은 아닙니다.  오히려 뉴욕이 좀 특이한 케이스라고 할 수 있습니다. 예를 들면, 로스앤젤레스(Los Angeles) 역시 도시 이름이기도 하지만, 카운티 이름이기도 한데  카운티가 더 큰 개념이죠.

그 외에 카운티와 유사한 개념을 루이지애나(Louisiana)에서는 Parish로, 알래스카(Alaska)에서는 Borough라고 부른다고 합니다.
