조제프 뒤크뢰(Joseph Ducreux, 1735–1802)는 오스트리아 여대공 안토니아(Archduchess Maria Antonia of Austria)가 14세인 1769년 그녀의 초상화를 그리기도 했는데, 그녀는 후에 루이 16세의 왕비가 되고, 프랑스 대혁명이 있던 1793년에 처형 당한 마리 앙투아네트 왕비(Queen Marie Antoinette of France, 1755-1793)입니다.

또한, 프랑스 궁전화가로 루이 16세가 처형되기 전 마지막 초상화를 그렸던 화가라고 합니다. 그리면서는 마지막 초상화가 될거라고는 생각하지 못했을, 루이 16세의 마지막 초상화를 그리고 나서 뒤크뢰는 런던으로 여행을 떠났다고 합니다. 그리고 나서 혁명이 일어나서 뒤크뢰는 난을 피할 수 있었다고 하네요.

일반적으로 궁정화가는 최고 권위에 종속하였으므로, 권위주의적이고 그 시대의 보수적 경향을 대표하는 화풍이 특징입니다. 위에서 처럼 뒤크뢰도 그러한 풍의 그림들을 남겼습니다.

궁정화가로서 무게감 있는 그림을 그리기는 했지만, 자신의 초상화만큼은 익살기 넘치는 까불이 표정을 많이 남겼습니다. 천성적으로 장난기가 많은데 그릴 수 없다 보니 자기자신을 모델로 해서는 원하는 그림들을 남겼나 봅니다.

덕분에 21세기 SNS 시대에 떠오르는 화가 중 한 명이 되었다고 합니다.
