엘리자베트 비제 르브룅이 활동하던 당시에는 여성이 입을 벌리고 웃는다는 것을 정숙하지 못한 일로 여겼다고 합니다. 그렇기 때문에 상류층 여성이 입을 벌리고 웃는 모습을 그린다는 것은 상상하기 어려웠죠. 지금으로서는 상상하기 힘든 분위기죠.

그런 사회적 분위기 속에서도 엘리자베트 비제 르브룅은 <딸 쥘리를 안고 있는 자화상>에서 자신이 살짝 입을 벌리고 웃고있는 모습을 그리고 있습니다. 활짝 벌리고 웃는 것도 아니었지만, 이 정도를 벌린 모습조차 도전적이었다고 할 수 있다네요.

엘리자베트 비제 르브룅이 1789년에 그린 비슷한 구도의 그림에서는 자신 뿐만 아니라 오히려 딸까지도 살짝 입을 벌리고 웃고 있는 모습으로 그리고 있습니다.
