The Ferranti Effect
Why does the voltage go UP instead of DOWN?
Did you think that electricity always loses voltage as it travels long distances? 🤔 Well, power grids sometimes experience the exact opposite! When the voltage at the receiving end mysteriously becomes higher than the sending end, we call it the Ferranti Effect.
Why does this happen? 🤷♂️
This phenomenon usually pops up when electricity demand is extremely low—like in the middle of the night (light-load conditions). Long transmission lines, especially underground cables, naturally act like giant batteries (capacitors). When power consumption drops, this capacitance creates a "leading current" that travels through the line, actively pushing the voltage higher instead of letting it drop.
How do we fix it? 🛠️
- The Problem: If the voltage gets too high, it puts massive stress on expensive grid equipment, potentially causing insulation failures or even blackouts!
- The Solution: To keep everything safe, power companies install devices called Shunt Reactors. Think of them as giant electrical sponges that absorb the excess reactive power, calming the voltage back down to safe levels! ✨
